Talan Update #3

Perfection
So we have an update on Talan's leg.  I thought it would be easier to copy and paste something his daddy wrote, he did a great job of explaining what is going on.

So today was our first orthopedic specialist appointment that we actually walked away from with any information. Unfortunately the information was not anything that we wanted to hear. As I am sure you are aware Talan's right leg is misshaped. We found out today that this is due to the lack of a Tibia. The ankle is turned inward because it is held in place mainly by the Tibia. He doesn't bend his leg because the Quadriceps muscle attaches to the Tibia and since it is not there the Hamstring is pulling his leg but the Quadriceps is not.

We were presented with 3 different options, 2 of which we quickly shot down and the third is not an ideal situation either.

The first option would be to do nothing, to leave his leg the way it is and he would be able to learn to perform some minor functions with it in place of his right arm. This option confines him to a wheelchair for his whole life and we don't feel that we would be doing the best for him with this option.

The second option presented to us was amputation and then a prosthetic. He has working toes and to me the idea of amputation was shot down when mentioned. I can't see cutting off a part of his body voluntarily.

The third option, and the one we like the most of the three, is reconstructive surgery. The worst part about this is that it will be ongoing. The Fibula would be moved to the place of the Tibia and he would have to have various procedures throughout childhood. The doctor mentioned a girl who recently graduated high school that had a similar issue and she went through similar procedures. I am hoping to contact this family and get a real picture of how this all works.

Our goal is to have Talan able to walk and run and play and have fun. We don't want his leg to affect his life, that's why we want to get everything started as soon as possible. The doctor today told us that he wouldn't start anything for at least a year.

We know that God is Sovereign and that He has a plan for Talan. We can't say that we understand but we have faith in a living God who loves us. We will be getting second and possibly third opinions and we appreciate your prayers.

I thank you for your time and continued support,
Devin

Please continue to pray for Talan and for his parents, that they have wisdom, favor, know which decisions to make and which doctors to go to.  Thank you!!
